POLICE COLLEGE HOSTS CELEBRATORY LECTURES FOR PLATINUM ANNIVERSARY

The Zambia Police Training College marked its Platinum Anniversary-70 years of service excellence on April 28, 2025.

As part of the ongoing celebrations to commemorate this milestone, the College hosted two special commemorative lectures in collaboration with the Zambia Police Service Headquarters Public Relations Office and the Airport Division.

The event was held on Tuesday, May 6, 2025, at the Zambia Police Training College Banquet Hall in Lilayi.

It is important for us as police officers to know where we are coming from - Mr. Godfrey Chilabi

In his opening remarks, the Division Commander of the Zambia Police Training College, Mr. M. Nawa, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), welcomed all officers and highlighted the significance of the occasion. He noted that the presentations aimed to reflect on the College’s history, where it began, where it is now, and the direction it is heading.

The First Presentation

The first presentation was delivered by Mr. Godfrey Chilabi, Senior Superintendent and Assistant Public Relations Officer at the Zambia Police. An enthusiast of Zambia Police history, he presented a lecture themed: “The Zambia Police Training College @70: Honouring Our Past, Shaping the Future of Police Training in Zambia and Beyond.”

He took the officers through the historical journey of the College, recounting how the closure of the Livingstone Training Depot in 1955 led to the establishment of the Northern Rhodesia Police Training School, now known as the Zambia Police Training College in Lilayi.

“It is important for us as police officers to know where we are coming from. Without that knowledge, it is difficult to reach our destination,” said Mr. Chilabi.

He also spoke about the future of the College beyond its 70th anniversary, emphasizing that contemporary policing requires embracing technology and strengthening collaboration with other stakeholders, including the communities it serves.

Mr Chilabi encouraged the College to continue forming partnerships with institutions of higher learning, such as allied police academies and universities, to share experiences and benchmark best practices.

The Second Presentation

The second presentation was delivered by Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Mr. Gift Nyambe, Assistant Director of Human Resource Management and Administration at the Airport Division. He stressed the central role of discipline in the Zambia Police Service.

“Without discipline in any given organisation, there can be no order. Without discipline, the organisation cannot achieve its goals,” he said, reiterating the importance of every officer playing their role through professional conduct to uphold the institution’s image. “Discipline must be at the core of every institution,” Mr. Nyambe added.

He also addressed the importance of embracing change management. “Change creates new environments and opportunities. It is through change that growth happens,” he said, cautioning that resistance to change can hinder organisational progress.

The event concluded with closing remarks from Division Commander Mr. Nawa, who thanked all participants and praised the presenters for their contributions to the College’s 70 Years of Service Excellence celebrations.

“This event is a clear testimony that the Police is united and will remain united,” said Mr. Nawa.

The Zambia Police Training College will continue holding activities to mark its 70th anniversary. These include exhibitions, community outreach programs, sports events, tree planting, and a thanksgiving service, all aimed at promoting unity, celebrating the College’s history, and supporting sustainable policing.
