The Office of the Inspector General of Police is responsible for directing and coordinating the activities of the Zambia Police Service (ZPS). The Office provides the overall policy guidance and oversight role while the functional heads will be responsible for executing the technical aspects of the ZPS. The office holder establishes strong linkages with the Defence Forces, other national security services and members of society in order to enhance internal security in the country
In addition, the Office ensures that there are effective linkages among and within the Directorates, Divisions and Units, which strengthens internal systems, improve co-ordination and communication for effective performance of the ZPS.
In this regard, the Office of the Inspector General ensures that there are effective management control mechanisms such as quarterly and monthly meetings at which long and short-term issues affecting the performance of the Service are discussed and reports presented on activities carried out and what is planned for the future. Over-all, the Inspector General of Police is responsible for effective strategic management of the ZPS.

The Public Relations Office is responsible for maintaining effective communication between the ZPS and the public in order to ensure correct and efficient information dissemination. The Unit performs the following specific functions:
The Peace Support Operations Office is responsible for planning, facilitating, processing and coordinating all peacekeeping matters in the ZPS. The Office performs the following specific functions:
