The Office of the Deputy Inspector General – Operations is responsible for the coordination of Police operations functions.
The Office ensures that there are linkages among and within the Directorates and Units which will improve co-ordination and communication for effective performance of the Police Service.
The Office of the Deputy Inspector General of Police – Operations oversees Provinces and the following Directorates and Units:
i. Crime Prevention and Support Services Directorate;
ii. Paramilitary Battalion;
iii. TAZARA Division;
iv. Kamfinsa School of Public Order Maintenance (SPOM)/Mobile Unit;
v. Airport Division;
vi. Protective Unit;
vii. Police Air Wing and
viii. National Command Centre

The Crime Prevention and Support Services Directorate is responsible for the management of Police Traffic Operations, Diplomatic Security Services, Mounted Services, Community Services and Marine Police functions in order to facilitate the maintenance of law and order..
The Battalion is a Special Support Group (SSG3) responsible for providing a striking force for use in disturbed areas including borders. It also provides paramilitary and police general duties training in order to impart skills and ensure availability of paramilitary police officers for deployment. The Paramilitary Battalion performs the following specific functions:
The Division is responsible for providing security along the Tanzania-Zambia Railways (TAZARA), Tanzania-Zambia Mafuta (TAZAMA) Oil Pipeline and surrounding areas in order to contribute to socio-economic development. The Division performs the following specific functions:
The Special Support Group (SSG1) is responsible for restoring order in disturbed areas. It also provides public order training in order to ensure availability of mobile police officers for deployment. The Unit performs the following specific functions:
The Division is responsible for providing security and protection to airport infrastructure, passengers and goods in transition at the airport. The Division performs the following specific functions:
The Unit is responsible for guarding vital installations, government buildings, VIPs and VIPs’ residences in order to contribute to socio-economic development of the country. The Unit performs the following specific functions:
The Air wing is responsible for using police aircraft to provide air support for crime-related matters to police stations and other units: including airborne assistance, in respect of armed robberies, house robberies, hijacking, vehicle theft, unrest-related incidents and crowd control, operational support to other units, as well as search and rescue incidents in order to enhance its operational efficiency. Further the Air wing is responsible for managing, serving and repairing the aircraft to maintain the aircrafts worthiness. The Section performs the following specific functions:
The Centre is responsible for coordinating response to emergency of all police operations in order to facilitate the maintenance of law and order. The Centre performs the following specific functions:
